Chaplaincy/Spiritual Care
The Halifax Centre of Hope is a Christ-centered community and extension of the greater ministry of The Salvation Army. In keeping with this, the Centre of Hope facilitates spiritual care programs and services for the purpose of encouraging all who come to us to find hope, life, and healing through a relationship with Jesus.
Weekly chapels are offered twice a week for all those who wish to attend. Spiritual care is also offered to those who are participants in the Pathway of Hope and the Anchorage Recovery Program. In addition, Bible studies and small groups are also available to help build community and foster an atmosphere of faith at the centre. One on one connections have also been a valuable way for people to grow in their faith in addition to finding strength to face the days challenges.
The chaplains at the Centre of Hope are also available in the community to support people who may need some extra support. Sometimes a listening ear and prayer support can go a long way in helping someone who is walking through a difficult season.
Spiritual care can take many forms such as listening and conversation, teaching the Word, prayer, encouragement, guidance, and the development of a spiritual care plan.
No matter what the situation, the chaplains at the Centre of Hope are available to journey with people through some of their most challenging days, offering a word of encouragement, a prayer of faith and providing practical supports as needed.
Housing Services
Open Arms
Open Arms is a community outreach ministry located in the heart of North-End Halifax. Our mission is to be a community partner with each family member and help to encourage, equip, and entertain. Some programs include Day Camps and After-School programming for children and youth, Celebrate Recovery, Mom & Tots, and Bible Studies for adults. We are guided by a desire to bring hope to our community that is rooted in the love and good news of Jesus Christ. The best solution to any of life’s challenges is a relationship with Jesus Christ and our hope is to see the community find redemption through Him. We strive to bring programs into the centre that help connect families, from the youngest child to the oldest adult.
We currently have a weekly afterschool program that is enjoyed by many young children in the community. The program includes arts & crafts, snacks, and a wide variety of games. We also have a bi-weekly baking program for older kids and a teens program for those in grades 7 to 12. Open Arms also partners with other Salvation Army ministries in the area in putting together an annual Jingle Jam and Easter Jam events for the community. We are still scratching the surface of the potential of Open Arms and look forward to what God has in store for our community!

Railton House (Corrections Halfway House)
"Railton House" as an Adult Residential Centre jointly with the Correctional Services of Canada was begun in September, 1983. In June of 1985 the A.R.C. relocated from the original ten-bed facility in Halifax to a fifteen-bed facility in Dartmouth, 318 Windmill Road. After minor renovations in 1998, Railton House’s capacity moved to 21 beds, where it stands today.
George Scott Railton, our namesake, is the man who first thought of turning William Booth's Christian Mission into an Army. He played a leading role in framing Army policies. "The deliverance from every thought of self-interest and from every particle of fear as to what men can do which fits people to pass through the dark and hard periods unmoved and unscarred, is for everyone who will seek it."
With Christian love and compassion, we seek to provide support for offenders coming from the Federal & Provincial institutions in the community regardless of race, colour, creed, sex or age.
Railton House is a bridge to the community and exists to promote the successful re-integration of offenders in to the community, while maintaining an acceptable level of risk suited to each individual. Railton House contributes to the management of that risk by providing suitable accommodation, monitoring and intervention, and contributing to social and economic support that assists conditionally released individuals to become law abiding citizens.
Railton House along with the Correctional Service of Canada assists our residents with the following areas of everyday life: Addictions, Sexual Abuse, Mental Health, Employment, Housing, Education, Finances, Spiritualty through Chaplain Services, Spousal/Family Estrangement, etc.
